CD Review Pop: Pink - Funhouse

L'album, 'Funhouse', era attesissimo dai fan, ed è il quinto cd della sua carriera, iniziata nel 2000 con 'Can't Take Me Home', a cui sono seguiti; 'Missundaztood' del 2001; 'Try This' del 2003 e il pluripremiato 'I'm Not Dead' del 2006.

Prosegue anche per questo cd la collaborazione con il team (hitmakers) 'Max Martin' e 'Billy Mann', (squadra che vince non si cambia), e la ragazzaccia della Pennsylvania (all'anagrafe Alecia Moore), è pronta a lasciare un altro segno nel panorama pop mondiale. A tutt'oggi la popstar, ha venduto la bella cifra di 22 milioni di album in tutto il mondo.

'Funhouse' è un disco semplice, pop, diretto, emotivo, crudo, funk, rock, e in oltremodo accattivante, e 'So What' (il singolo) fa subito centro. Il brano (un 'na na na' contagiosissimo) con chitarre rock in bella evidenzada, delinea da subito le intenzioni di tutto il lavoro. Con 'Please Don't Leave Me' e 'Bad Influence', si rimane nello stesso territorio. Con il funk 'Funhouse', si alza il ritmo e si balla. Ma è con 'I Don't Believe You', la ballata, e l'acustica 'Crystal Ball' che i ritmi si smorzano e tutto diventa più pacato.

Nell'insieme 'Funhouse' è un bel disco, dove la Pink (scapestrata e ribelle del passato) si spoglia del personaggio e diventa se stessa, adulta, con i suoi cattivi pensieri, amori sbagliati e canzoni da mandare in classifica.

CD Review: Brett Anderson - Wilderness

A un anno di distanza dal precedente, omonimo, esordio solista, si rifà vivo Brett Anderson (ex Suede) con 'Wilderness'. Questo nuovo lavoro va preso per quello che è: una raccolta di ballate introspettive dal profilo piuttosto defilato, che raccontano di un autore ormai interamente proiettato in una fase creativa che sembra non nutrire alcuna ambizione particolare.

Canzoni scritte più per sé che per un eventuale uditorio, visto che verosimilmente avranno una circolazione piuttosto limitata al di fuori della cerchia degli estimatori della prima ora.

Nel complesso 'Wilderness', considerata anche la sua brevità, risulta più compatto e coeso del suo predecessore e può contare su una manciata di pezzi piuttosto intensi che ne rendono più incisivo l’ascolto. Il singolo 'Back To You', ad esempio, in duetto con l’attrice francese Emmanuelle Seigner è particolarmente efficace. Buone anche 'Blessed', 'Clowns', l’iniziale 'A Different Place' e 'Funeral Mantra', dal taglio più operistico, e con tutta probabilità uno dei pezzi più pregiati della collezione.

Il disco si pone a metà strada tra un Rufus Wainwright e Damien Rice, senza avere però l’estro esuberante del primo, e la poesia fantasticante del secondo.

CD Review: Ani DiFranco - Red Letter Year

I lavori di 'Ani Di Franco' andrebbero solo annunciati, magari elencati, di certo non recensiti. Chi la ama sa già cosa aspettarsi, tutti gli altri cercano solo un pertugio che consenta loro di penetrare nel suo mondo di operosa artista a 360°.

I meriti di questa artista, sono nei milioni di copie vendute senza mai passare per i canali della grande distribuzione. Trenta gli album pubblicati (diciassette in studio, dodici live e una raccolta) in venti anni di attività. Un vero records!!

In questo 'Red Letter Year' Ani misura i passi con grande attenzione, tra canzoni esili, essenziali e minimaliste performance vocali. Peccato però che il disco non cambi mai passo, e che dietro tanta sobrietà e delicatezza s’avverta un sentore di forte stanchezza. La maggior parte dei pezzi poi, sa di cose già sentite nei suoi album precedenti. Così infatti è nel folk-jazz da camera di “Red Letter Year”, “Landing Gear” e “Star Matter”. Solo in “The Atom” (archi, gong, tamburi) e nella solistica nenia folk di “Way Tight” si aggiunge qualcosa di sostanzioso al suo sterminato canzoniere. Comunque assolta!!

CD Review: Mogwai - The Hawk Is Howling

L’uscita di 'The Hawk Is Howling' dei Mogwai ci ha indubbiamente colto un po’ di sorpresa!! Primo; perché non si avevano notizie in merito. Secondo; ci si chiedeva se i cinque di Glasgow avessero ancora qualcosa da dire. Il loro cosiddetto post rock è stato infatti sviscerato in tutte le salse assumendo le forme più svariate diventando oramai una realtà ben consolidata.

Ma dal primo ascolto il passato ritorna violentemente. La freschezza di 'Young Team' e la maturità compositiva di Zidane si fondono perfettamente in dieci suite altalenanti tra calme rilassanti e sognanti 'Local Authority' e frenetiche accelerazioni, sporcate addirittura da chitarre sfacciatamente metalliche e tirate all’esasperazione 'Batcat'. Poco da dire insomma, ancora un bel disco.

The latest from Glasgow's post-rock pioneers expounds on the melodic beauty of 2006's Mr Beast. I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead - a requiem of lost promise but few regrets - sets the mood, the backward guitar notes slipping and sliding like the Doors singer in his final bath. Masters of the soft/loud dynamic, the band create a wall of sound that reaches beyond the tumultuous guitars, discovering twinkling optimism in fragile instrumentation and sensitive synths. The lyric-free songs are awe-inspiring, yet accessible. The unapologetically heavy rocker Batcat sounds like Loop slugging it out with Slayer, but it's a rare moment of aggression, like the vengeful noise of The Precipice. The Sun Smells Too Loud has more than a whiff of pop about it, and Scotland's Shame sparkles like light bouncing off broken glass. Not so much a progression, then, as an hour-long polishing of Mogwai's new aesthetic.

CD Review: Jessica Simpson - Do You Know

Jessica Simpson, con il nuovo albun 'Do You Know' si getta a piedi uniti sulle orme già tracciate da Faith Hill e Shania Twain!!

Forse cominciava a stare stretto il panorama pop a 'Jessica Simpson', dove la competizione con la nuova generazione di stelline-pop da alta classifica, cominciava ad essere svantaggiosa. E allora eccola calarsi nei panni di perfetta cantante country-pop, con questo nuovo lavoro 'Do You Know' che odora di Nashville.

L'album prodotto dal pluri-premiato Grammy Award songwriter Brett James (Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts) e dall'altrettanto decorato John Shanks (Alanis Morissette, Bon Jovi, Keith Urban) è pieno di ottimi brani. Tutte le canzoni sono in pieno tema country, dove si strizza l'occhio a volte un po' alla Twain, a volte un po' alla Hill. Però si sà; di questi tempi in America puntando li, non si sbaglia!!

Jessica nel disco divide le interpretazioni con alcuni dei migliori cantautori di Nashville (Troy Verges, Hillary Lindsey). E ancora più degno di nota è che la title track, 'Do You Know', scritta per lei da una dei suoi idoli: Dolly Parton. E che l'avrebbe mai detto!!!

Jessica Simpson' s sixth album and country debut, "Do You Know," forgoes rich storytelling and genuine heart in exchange for pop-driven, nondescript vocal showcases.

Tossing words like "God," "Pray," "Angels" and "Damn" into a lyric pool does not a country song make. Apparently, no one told Simpson, who had a hand in writing every track. A few steel guitars help the mood, but without an everyday-America feel or any real substance to the songs, these tunes feel more like bubblegum love-pop or mainstream radio ballads.
Simpson's thoughts are usually drowned out by heavy musical productions, repetitious choruses, or her own beautiful, but trying-too-hard vocalizations. Reiterating lines like "When I loved you like that," or "Are you man enough?" doesn't make them any more believable or authentic, and it comes across as what it is--filler. It's hard to concentrate on anything but Simpson's singing ability throughout the record, making "Do You Know" seem more like an "American Idol" audition rather than an organic, true-blooded expression.

Although the songwriting is mostly weak, there are a few promising selections. "Remember That" is a catchy girlfriend-to-girlfriend lecture about not going back to a bad man. "Remember how he pushed you in the hallway/just enough to hurt a little bit/Remember the whiskey in his whispers/and the lies that fell so easy from his lips," Simpson wails. And she shines on the hit single "Come On Over," a fast-talking, descriptive plea for company. Closing the album with star-power, Dolly Parton lends lyrics and vocals for the album's title track, a fun, boot-tapping, hand-clapping devotion to love.

"Do You Know" is a sweet, easy-moving collection of songs that never really conjure up any strong emotions. While Simpson has certainly mastered the art of singing, she may need to spend a little more time in Nashville to get some genuine country spirit into her music.

Prima compilation ufficiale per l'ex 'Eurythmics' Annie Lennox; "The Annie Lennox Collection" relativa alla sua produzione come solista.

E' passato poco meno di un anno dall'utimo lavoro 'Songs of Mass Destruction' e la Sony pubblica questo 'The Annie Lennox Collection', dove trovano posto tutti i successi della cantante Inglese relativi alla sua personale discografia solista.

Tutte le tracce sono estratte dai suoi 4 lavori come solista, distribuiti dal 1992 al 2007 a partire da 'Diva' del 1992, 'Medusa' 1995, 'Bare' 2003 e l'ultimo 'Songs of Mass Destruction' del 2007 da cui provengono; 'Sing' e 'Dark Road'.

"The Annie Lennox Collection" è una bella raccolta, diciamo.....indispensabile per tutti quelli che dell'ex 'Eurythmics' si fossero (negli ultimi anni) distratti un attimo e persi qualcosa!!

CD Review: The Verve - Forth

'Forth' si può definire senza dubbi; la terza rinascita dei 'The Verve'. L'album del ritorno va ben oltre quanto promesso dal singolo 'Love Is Noise' e si dimostra un disco vitale e motivato da ottime idee. Un lavoro che difficilmente passerà alla storia o nelle top-list degli album top del 2008, ma sicuramente un buon disco.

Questo 'Forth' dimostra quanto Richard Ashcroft nell'economia dei suoi lavori abbia bisogno di Nick McCabe per dare il meglio di sè. Mentre i lavori solisti del frontman sono stati - specialmente gli ultimi due - alquanto discutibili. I 'Verve' quindi sono ancora in grado di tirare fuori degli ottimi pezzi, anche se la loro unica sfida è quella di atrovare il vero successore di quel disco planetario che risulta al nome di (Urban Hymns).

In 'Forth' convivono le due anime della band: una più pop ed immediata che alterna grandi pezzi pop come 'Rather Be', a soluzioni meno ispirate come 'Numbness'. Dall'altra parte invece l'anima più eterea e sofisticata, forse la più interessante, che riesce a stupire con alcuni soluzioni geniali come l'apertura di 'Sit And Wonder' o nella bellissima ballada conclusiva 'Appalachian Springs'.

'Forth' è un disco da ascoltare diverse volte prima di assimilarlo completamente. Ma di certo segna l'ennesima rinascita dei Verve.

The last time most people in North America saw The Verve, Richard Ashcroft was walking down the street to beautiful strings and shoving people out of the way in the video for “Bittersweet Symphony.” The song, from the band’s most successful album Urban Hymns, was 11 years ago, though, and it wouldn’t be unlikely to suggest that many have forgotten all about the British rock quartet.

The tour for Urban Hymns was a chaotic one, to say the least. Bassist Simon Jones collapsed on stage and a slew of other problems peppered the tour. In April of 1999, after much conjecture, The Verve announced it had split up (again).

Frontman Ashcroft headed into solo project territory and released his debut, Alone With Everybody, in June 2000. Human Conditions (October 2002) and Keys to the World (January 2006) followed and kept Ashcroft in the public eye. Other band members continued on in a variety of side projects and fill-in jobs.

Then, like a bolt from the blue, the band announced a reunion with the original line-up of Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones, and drummer Peter Salisbury. The plan was to tour in November of 2007 and release an album in 2008. The tour was extremely successful and the band started to release some new songs at various gigs, hinting audiences towards the feel of the new album.

June 23, 2008 saw the official radio premiere of the band’s new single, “Love Is Noise.” The Verve followed up the premiere by closing a knockout set at Glastonbury ‘08 with the track. After a variety of special sessions and gigs with new songs, the band announced the album’s title, Forth, and revealed an August 25, 2008 release date in the UK and an American release for the following day.

And so, with The Verve back to full-time rock-and-roll duty, Forth is upon us.

A sweet and expressive record, Forth is a blend of experimentalism and organization. There are tones of Urban Hymns and the band’s earlier work, with disco beats and light strumming coming together under one beautiful roof. Lots of guaranteed concert tracks highlight the record, with enough anthemic moments to set thousands of hands clapping.

CD Review: KEANE - Perfect Symmetry

E' perfetta la simmetria del nuovo album del trio inglese 'KEANE', che con i precedenti due album 'Hopes And Fears' (2004) e 'Under The Iron Sea' (2006) ha venduto più di 8 milioni di cd.

'Perfect Symmetry' rivela attraverso le 11 canzoni, la maturità e la raffinatezza che i KEANE riescono a trasmettere anche al primo ascolto, con melodie perfette, lineari e indimenticabili.

Dal 4 al 11 agosto il singolo ‘Spiralling’ è stato reso disponibile dal sito della band in omaggio ai fans. ‘The Lovers Are Losing’ è invece il primo singolo in radio dai primi di settembre e già entrato nelle playlist radiofoniche di molte radio di gusto – anche senza il supporto di un video, che è comunque in arrivo per fine settembre/inizio ottobre. Riconosciuti come ‘la band senza chitarre’, in questo album i Keane sperimentano e introducono strumenti come la chitarra acustica e il sax.

L’album, il primo che viene prodotto direttamente dalla band stessa è in 2 versioni: standard CD con 11 brani + deluxe Box CD con Bonus DVD di cui il cd contiene un brano in più rispetto alla versione standard. Il dvd contiene il ‘Making of the Album’, un commentario brano per brano, il video di ‘Spiralling’ e tutti i brani dell’album in versione ‘demo’.
L'album sarà pubblicato il (13 Ottobre 2008)

CD Review: Calexico - Carried To Dust

Dopo la bella prova in stile country-pop di 'Garden Ruin', i 'Calexico' tornano alla fusione tex-mex con questo nuovo cd 'Carried To Dust', che li aveva fatti conoscere ed amare già dai tempi di 'The Black Light'.

Come sempre bravi a suonare e a comporre, Burns e Convertino aggiungono con 'Carried To Dust' un nuovo, pregevole episodio alla loro saga di frontiera fra Arizona e Messico. Le coordinate sono ormai note: a una base alternative-mariachi si sovrappone una curiosa metafisicità etnica, percepibile tanto nei momenti intensi (Victor Jara’s Hands, The News About William, House Of Valparaiso con Sam Beam/Iron & Wine) quanto in quelli più ipnotici (Two Silver Trees, Man Made Lake). L'album è stato registrato ai Wavelab Studios in Tuscon, Arizona ,con la produzione di Craig Schumacher, da tempo braccio destro dei due Calexico.

L'’edizione italiana è suggellata dalla bonus track 'Polpo', cantata da un Capossela bravo e risaputo.

CD Review Rock: Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul

Gli 'Oasis' sono definitivamente bolliti o no!!... A smentire tutti ci pensa 'Dig Out Your Soul', un disco azzeccatissimo, fresco, rock, e pieno di bellissimo brani.

Questa volta i due fratellini Gallagher mettono insieme un disco ben fatto, anche se molto influenzato dall’opera dei fab4, soprattutto quelli psichedelici di metà carriera. Ma questo ormai non è un problema. Dai quattro di Liverpol hanna pescato tutti!! Ciò nonostante (o forse proprio grazie a questo) 'Dig Out Your Soul' è un buonissimo album, scritto, registrato e prodotto in totale assenza di droghe. (così quanto dichiarato dai fratelli, che tra l’altro hanno cominciato anche una vera e propria campagna contro l’uso di stupefacenti.

Molte delle canzoni hanno, nelle liriche, riferimenti mistici e spirituali in una sorta di palese manifestazione di paura e fragilità. L’inquietudine degli eccessi e la debolezza dello spirito, contrapposte alla concretezza della maturità, con tutti i fremiti e le rinunce che questa comporta, sono i temi più evidenti delle nuove canzoni del gruppo.

Musicalmente, invece, il disco si basa su basi più concrete, alcune tipicamente British con ballate ben congeniate e scorrevoli come 'I'm Outta Time' e 'Soldier On' scritte da Liam, e qualche venatura progressive anni 70 come in 'High Horse Lady' o 'To Be Where There's Life' (di Gem Archer). Un suono Beat della più bell’acqua, prodotto dai Gallagher assieme al fidato David Sardy, che riporta sulla giusta direzione una band che l’ha troppe volte persa. Bentornato al Brit-Pop.

CD Review: John Hiatt - Same Old Man

Il titolo di una vecchia canzone di 'Steve Earle' esemplifica perfettamente la situazione: è probabile che 'John Hiatt' non sia più l'umorale 'Angry Young Man' di un tempo. Ma in quanto a capacità di scavare a fondo nei sentimenti, nulla è mutato. 'Same Old Man', ultimo album del songwriter americano, è un viaggio nella memoria di un uomo che ha dedicato la propria esistenza alla musica.

Con la voce emozionante di sempre e un bel tappeto sonoro roots-rock e blues, 'John Hiatt' alterna storie di vita on the road (Old Days), d'amore e di relazioni umane intense (Love You Again e What Love Can Do), ricordi giovanili e riflessioni sul presente (Cherry Road e Our Times). 'Same Old Man' riporta 'John Hiatt' ad alti livelli espressivi e ha il merito di far riscoprire il piacere ammaliante e la suggestione senza tempo delle ballate rock.

Per quanto riguarda il DVD, sono diverse registrazioni effettuate dal vivo in quello che sembra essere uno studio televisivo da qualche parte nel mondo.

John Hiatt's conversational lyrics sound off-the-cuff, which means they likely resulted from many hours of labor. The work was worth it, because "Same Old Man" ranks with the best music of Hiatt's 34-year recording career.
He sings about love in the opening round and love on the ropes, about food and paper cuts and "doppelganger caterwauling." "Same Old Man" is sweet but not sentimental, tuneful, honest and very, very funny.
On his first release since 2005's fine "Master of Disaster," Hiatt produced and engineered himself, and he puts his voice front and center. As always, Hiatt sings like someone straining to complete the final set of the night at the local roadhouse. The raw vocals are a perfect match for such songs as "Hurt My Baby," where pain is palpable as Hiatt delivers the chorus.
He's supported by bass, drums and Luther Dickinson, who plays guitar and mandolin and provides an ideal counterpoint to the vocals by making every note count. Hiatt's daughter, Lilly, contributes lovely harmony on two songs.
Dad delivers his droll lyrics as if they're throwaways, which makes them even better. "I'm a long shot, baby," he sings. "But they do come in." "Same Old Man" laps the field.

Sguardi che consumano un bicchiere di whiskey, occhi che scrutano orizzonti lontani, fronti invecchiate, malinconia, il tutto raccontato con una poetica cruda e lucida. This CD was difficult for me to review for several reasons. First, I was a Mann-fan from back in her days with ‘Til Tuesday. Second, I lost track of her until a little over a year or so ago, when she sang on a Jim White song, “Static In The Radio." I wasn’t familiar with her name after this long absence, and I’d either never heard or never noticed Jim White’s name, but that particular song caught my attention.

I guess I’m like a lot of people today who buy music. Gone are the days when I’d run out and buy a new album or CD based on the fact that I like the group and they have a new CD out. Actually, those days have been gone for a good 20 years or so. Like many people, I was “once burned, twice shy.” When the record companies began putting out CDs with one or two decent songs and the rest dreck, that’s when I became a careful shopper. After getting burned two or three times (OK, I was a little slow to catch on), I began scrutinizing the CDs before committing myself.

When I heard “Static,” though, I sat up and paid attention; then I read up on both White and Mann. I still wasn’t sold on White, mainly because I wasn’t familiar with any of his past work. But when I read that Mann had been the singer for ‘Til Tuesday (which I’d forgotten), I decided to give this CD a try.

Having it to do over again, I wouldn’t have picked up Smilers. I should have listened to my earlier cautions on buying. Not that this CD is bad; don’t get me wrong on that. I still think Mann has a terrific voice, her arrangements are well written and well executed. But the lyrics, while catchy, are bland. The songs on this CD make excellent pop music; however, I don’t usually listen to pop. It’s not worth it (to me) to wade through hours of pop music waiting for that one or two kernels of meaningful music. Also, if a song has lyrics, it’s important to me that they me meaningful, or amusing, or funny, or that they strike me in some other way. That they have an impact, to put it clearly.

I’m still in love with Aimee Mann’s voice but she’ll have to make big strides in her lyrics for me to pick up another CD by her in the future.

Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer

Dopo essersi dedicati ai rispettivi progetti paralleli, Dan Boeckner e Spencer Krug, si sono ritrovati per dare vita al secondo lavoro dei 'Wolf Parade': 'At Mount Zoomer'. questo nuovo disco è stato concepito durante lunghe jam session e improvvisazioni all’interno della chiesa di Montreal, di proprietà degli Arcade Fire. Il concetto con il quale è stato registrato, è quello di evitare categoricamente la ricerca della canzone ‘singolo’, che avrebbe direzionato l'intero lavoro in terre a loro non gradite. Già l'ottimo 'Apologies to the Queen Mary' datato 2005, viveva di alti e bassi. Quì invece il nuovo lavoro impressiona per essere più omogeneo, compatto e alternativo. Ecco quindi che in 'At Mount Zoomer' trovano spazio le sperimentazioni, le trame più complesse ed un lavoro più importante e deciso da parte di ogni componente del gruppo. Un deciso passo avanti quindi che conferma i Wolf Parade, come una delle band più importanti e ricercate nel panorama indie-rock internazionale!!.

The enigmatic and always-erudite Wolf Parade (who count among their songwriting ranks Spencer Krug of Sunset Rubdown and Frog Eyes, and Dan Boeckner of Handsome Furs) release their second full-length, 'At Mount Zoomer' to great anticipation. After the woozy folk anarchy of their debut (2006's 'Apologies To The Queen Mary'), this is the sound of a band pushing the envelope, exploring newer, more progressive sounds than before. The band jammed in isolation for many months before actually recording anything, lending the record a definite sense of assuredness and accomplished glee.

Review:
Early word on the sixth album from Weezer--and their third self-titled record, although fans, sensibly, are referring to it as 'The Red Album'--is that this is their 'experimental' record. Luckily, Rivers Cuomo isn’t interested in penning his own jazz odyssey; for him, experimental is just finding cunning ways to nuance Weezer’s stock-in-trade--crunchy, candy-sweet guitars and vocal harmonies--with new pop tricks. The sardonic lyric of "Pork and Beans" hints at a new direction: "Timabaland knows the way to reach the top of the charts," Cuomo sings, "maybe if I work with him I can perfect the art". Actually, Timbaland’s not on board, but producer Jacknife Lee brings a variety of drum machines and electronics, and Weezer rise to the challenge with some generally inspired messing around. "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Theme)" sees Cuomo adopt a gangsta rap slur over screaming sirens, while elsewhere, the other three Weezer members take a turn at the microphone. But it’s Cuomo’s songs that are the winners--notably "Heart Songs", a tribute to the songs that "never feel wrong" that swoops from melodic schmaltz to grunge scuzz with a deft invocation of Nirvana. Skip to the bonus tracks, meanwhile, for a great cover of "The Weight" that takes The Band’s original and drenches it in chundering guitars.

3 Doors Down - 3 Doors Down

3 Doors Down, un altro ottimo album dalla brillante rock band dei 3 Doors Down. A giudicare dai primi due brani pubblicati 'Citizen/Soldier' e 'It's Not My Time', entrambi basate sul tema dei soldati impegnati a combattere la guerra in Iraq, ci riporta immediatamente alle canzoni del loro primo album, che riprendevano anni fà lo stesso increscioso tema, e musicalmente parlando invece, segna un ritorno indietro al loro suono originale. E se il loro primo album fu una vera sorpresa, questo - sulla stessa falsa riga - non dovrebbe deludere.

Questo quarto disco intitolato solo, 3 Doors Down, offre la più forte raccolta della loro carriera, e per fortuna loro, abbandona il sound 'mainstream' dei dischi precedenti e riconducibile a band come (Nickelback e Puddle Of Mudd) anche se (vedi la vita) il batterista Daniel Adair è entrato nei Nickelback, sostituito da Greg Upchurch, venuto dai Puddle Of Mudd).

Nonstante gli scambi di batterista il disco suona hard al punto giusto. Già l'iniziale 'Train', spara duro e anche le già citate 'Citizen/Soldier', 'It's Not My Time', 'Give It To Me' sono sulla stessa riga. Il primo momento di pausa è con 'Pages', una ballad intensa e coinvolgente. Nel complesso un album pulsante e pieno belle melodie e di energia.

3 Doors Down, "3 Doors Down" (Universal Republic): Fist-pumping arena rock is a favorite target for critics, who remain somewhat baffled as to why these bands continue to fill major venues and play upward of 300 shows a year. Truth be told, the post-grunge scene sounds increasingly bland and repetitive — making it hard for any band of that genre to stand out.

On their self-titled fourth disc, 3 Doors Down offer the strongest collection of their career, and fortunately separate themselves a bit from the mainstream rock crowd — think Nickelback and Puddle of Mudd for clarity (coincidentally, former drummer Daniel Adair left to join Nickelback and his replacement, Greg Upchurch, is a former member of Puddle of Mudd). 3 Doors Down maintain their fiery mix of southern hard rock and bic-lighter ballads with pulsating energy.

There's no denying a slew of arena-ready standouts, including the muscular "Train," the uplifting "It's The Only One You've Got," and the 80s-ish charm of "Runaway." Lest we forget the hard-rockin' ladies, they're sure to fall for the soft touch of "Let Me Be Myself" and "Your Arms Feel Like Home."

The band also hits a grand slam with lead single "It's Not My Time," a track that's already dominating rock radio with its ridiculously catchy riff and crowd-pleasing chorus. 3 Doors Down aren't going to win over any harsh critics with this effort, but they probably have another platinum seller and sold-out tour on their hands.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Disc closer "She Don't Want The World" is a moody tale of longing backed by minimal guitar and slick overdubs that sounds nothing like 3 Doors Down, who should try branching out like this more often.

Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas also known as Ex Murda Inc princess was first discovered By P Diddy who wanted to sign her after hearing her voice and for having a character of not being a suck up is back with her forth album set to release on June 3rd 2008.

I'll have to say in this record Ashanti's made sure we know that she isn't the Murda inc foolish she used to be but now a woman by making not only a fashion statement but also showing how much her voice matured. She has a solid team of producers like Marcus Aurelius, Lt Hutton, Rodney DarkChild Jerkins, Ron 'neff-U' Feemster, Akon, Peter Stengaard, channel 7 and Legend BabyFace with Features like Robin Thicke, Akon and Nelly. She also wrote most of her songs which i never knew about Ashanti.

The Declaration opens up with an intro where she states 2008 it has been 4 years she experience life, death and feeling pain that she never felt before which she is declaring that she IS the declaration. Follows the First Single The Way that i love you. From there you get different vibes, from loving a man, cheaters, the standard struggle in any relationship to bring you to the love for her own mother. To End it with Declaration where she states that she is STILL here that she sees him for what he is. They told her she would never make it but she made it and trusted her faith. The whole thing sounded almost like a soap opera.

One of my favorite track Titled Struggle. She talks about different struggle within a relationship, how they been together for 5 years now that she loves him, That she isn't perfect he isn't either, for what it's worth i will struggle cause i want to be in your life so i'll keep trying.

Alanis Morissette sta per tornare sulla scena musicale con un nuovo album 'Flavors of Entanglement'. Dopo alcuni dischi decisamente mediocri, eccola finalmente con un nuovo cd all'altezza del suo esordio 'Jagged Little Pill'. In questo lavoro Alanis risulta più matura, e sembra conoscere con sicurezza la nuova direzione musicale intrapresa, al punto che tutto l'album ne risente in modo positivo.

Alanis è andata in studio e ha messo in musica tutte quelle sensazioni legate al privato, riuscendo così a creare un diverso approccio al songwriting, che questa volta "così come era stato per 'Jagged', pare abbia funzionato al meglio). Lo standard delle 11 tracce, risulta una versatile raccolta di brani pop rock, dove lei incorpora la sua voce nelle chitarre e nei sintetizzatori, cosa abbastanza nuova nel suo sound, ma con interessanti nuovi risultati, come ad esempio su 'Straitjacket' o 'Versions of Violence'.

Il primo singolo già uscito; 'Underneath', è uno dei tanti brani che tocca la sua rottura con Reynolds. La canzone inizia con parole che sottolineano il disaccordo e l'inizio a una separazione. "Look at us break our bonds in this kitchen/ Look at us rallying all our defenses/ Look at us waging war in our bedroom," riflessione introspettiva, prima di aprirsi in un intenso e azzeccato chorus vocale pop. Un album quindi bello e emotivamente sentito, che suona inevitabilmente autobiografico, in quanto solo in questo stato d'animo la Morissette sembra in grado di dare il meglio.

Alanis Morissette is about to come back on the scene. After several years of mediocre tunes that didn't chart as well, she's returned to the pissed off heartbroken Alanis we met on Jagged Little Pill. Only this time around she's more mature, knows the musical direction she wants to take and is doing so with her latest release Flavors of Entanglement due out in U.S. stores June 10th, June 2nd internationally, and May 30th in Germany. Many of the songs have been previewed on her recent tour with Matchbox20.

Alanis has roughed it the past year. After being engaged to actor Ryan Reynolds, and amongst other things she's refused to speak of in recent interviews, she's taken that heartache and put it down on paper. Being quoted to have written "in the present instead of retrospect," Alanis went into the studio and wrote what she was feeling at that time, a different approach to songwriting that may have just worked out for the better.

The standard 11 track compilation is a versatile collection. She's incorporated her unique voice against guitar driven licks overdubbed with interesting beats and synths, such as found on "Versions of Violence." The song is a mix of angry guitar rhythms in the chorus with a doubled vocal while the verses use a deep vocal tone against various keyboard sounds. "Versions of Violence" is the modern day angry Alanis and we wouldn't have her any other way.

The first single may slightly touch her breakup with Reynolds. "Underneath" starts with lyrics suggesting a disagreement and a start to a split up. "Look at us break our bonds in this kitchen/ Look at us rallying all our defenses/ Look at us waging war in our bedroom," she starts before crashing into an intense vocal pop chorus.

Il leggendario cantante americano Neil Diamond, in team con il produttore Rick Rubin, - già sul precedente album del 2006 "12 Song" - realizza un nuovo album 'Home Before Dark', dove la musica si colora delle radici pop del suo glorioso passato.

Il disco è un grandissimo capolavoro di musica minimalista, dove su tutto risalta la profonda voce di Neil, che riempie ed emoziona come non mai. I brani sono di altissimo livello, su tutte 'Pretty Amazing Grace', 'Another Day That Time Forgot' (featuring Natalie Maines), e 'No Words', che passeranno sicuramente alla storia come piccoli capolavori. Ormai non si contano più gli album realizzati da Diamond nella sua lunghissima carriera, ma quel che è certo, è che la qualità artistica non è mai venuta meno, e a differenza di tanti altri colleghi americani, lui di passi falsi non ne ha mai fatti!!

In questo 'Home Before Dark' oltre al citato Rubin alla produzione, troviamo illustre collaborazioni come le Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines, e due quinti degli Heartbreakers, Mike Campbell alle chitarre e Benmont Tench alle keyboards.

More rhythmic in nature, the album sees Diamond return to his roots once again, creating an album of classic contemporary pop songs. CD Review Rock: Paul Weller - 22 Dreams

Paul Weller nuovo album '22 Dreams', 21 nuove canzoni per il Modfather ex Jam e Style Council.

Ha trentanni di carriera alle spalle Paul Weller, ma di idee ne ha ancora da vendere e in grande quantità, a tal punto che questo 22 Dreams è il nono lavoro che realizza in studio. (Uscita prevista per il 2 giugno). Il disco molto impegnativo - ben 21 tracce - vede tra le tante collaborazioni anche due Oasis; Noel Gallagher e Gem Archer, che hanno portato il loro contributo alla stesura di 'Echoes Round The Sun'. Altre guest-star presenti nel cd; Steve Cradock degli 'Ocean Colour Scene', e l'ex chitarrista dei 'Blur' Graham Coxon.

Weller in attesa della pubblicazione del disco - e per tenere in caldo i suoi fans - mette sul mercato un primo singolo con due canzoni, prese ovviamente dal cd; 'Have You Made Up Your Mind' e 'Echoes Round The Sun', due ottimi brani di un (classico indie rock britannico), che prende ispirazione sia dalle sue precedenti produzione musicali, non che, dalle proposte del nuovo panorama rock inglese.

L'album è stato registrate nello suo studio personale; il Weller's Black Barn studio nel Surrey, e prodotto da Simon Dine e dallo stesso Weller.
