'Keeps Gettin Better: A Decade of Hits' [Deluxe CD + DVD] una succolenta raccolta dei grandi hits e video di Christina Aguilera.

Ecco arrivato il momento propizio per un Greatest Hits di Christina Aguilera. "Keeps Gettin Better: A Decade of Hits - Deluxe CD + DVD", mette insieme i grandi hits della cantante americana, e una serie dei migliori video clip.

Senza dubbio una delle migliori voci del panorama pop-r&b internazionale, la Aguilera dopo sei album (l'ultimo 'Back To Basics' è del 2006), e un successo mondiale inarrestabile, pubblica la prima compilation ufficiale (escludendo le varie uscite di remix).

Nel doppio CD/DVD, sono presenti tutti i grandi hits: dal primo singolo 'Genie In A Bottle' del 1999, a 'Candyman', 'Ain't No Other Man' e 'Hurt' dall'ultimo Back To Basics. Interessante raccolta (CD + BONUS DVD) per Katie Melua; The Katie Melua Collection, una selezione delle migliori canzoni realizzate fino ad ora dalla cantautrice di origine georgiana, ma di base in inghilterra.

Tra le cose migliori contenute in questa Collection, segnaliamo la 'What A Wonderful World', in coppia con 'Eva Cassidy', un grande emozionante duetto con la cantante americana scomparsa alcuni anni fa. Naturalmente non poteva mancare 'Nine Million Bicycles', una delle sue canzoni più popolari.

La raccolta (17 brani) comprende anche tre nuove canzoni: .l'up-tempo 'Two Bare Feet', che sarà il primo singolo, la malinconica e poetica 'Toy Collection' (soundtrack del film 'Faintheart ') e il blues 'What I Miss About You'.

Del progetto fa parte un bonus DVD, che comprende 90 min. di un live show, girato a Rotterdam nel corso del tour 2008. Il DVD include anche un'interessante 'Behind the Screens', dove si puo' seguire la preparazione del tour di quest'anno.

Imponente mega [BOX SET] antologico 'Ikons' (4cd x 56 tracce) per i quattro uomini mascherati del glam-rock: I Kiss. Questa raccolta celebra i 35 anni di carriera della band.

Ormai più o meno lo sappiamo tutti, i Kiss (parola di Gene 'linguaccia' Simmons) non faranno più album nuovi!! Chissà se sarà vero e rispetteranno tale affermazione. Di fatto stà però, che non si risparmiano per quanto riguarda; (Greatest Hits, Best Of, Kissology, e antologie di ogni tipo). Le uscite in questo senso non si contano più!!

Questo imponente mega Box antologico 'Ikons' (4cd) per i quattro uomini mascherati del glam rock, si distribuisce in quattro cd, e ogni cd è dedicato ai quattro membri originali della band: Simmons, Stanley, Frehley e Criss, coprendo così quasi tutto il vastissimo repertorio realizzato dalla banda, tutta; rock, botti, fuoco e fiamme.

Ovviamente c'è tutto il meglio messo a frutto in trentacinque di carriera; il primo album risale al 1974 (Kiss) e l'ultimo 'Psycho Circus' è del 1998. Noi ci limitiamo a segnalare che nelle 56 tracce non mancano: Calling Dr. Love, Detroit Rock City, God Of Thunder, e la ballereccia I Was Made For Lovin You.

CD Review Pop: Mariah Carey - The Ballads

A breve distanza dal'ultimo 'E=MC²' Mariah Carey pubblica un nuovo album 'The Ballads', dove trovano posto solo le sue bellissime ballate.

Non mancano mai sul mercato discografico le varie compilation, sottoforma di (The Best of, Greatest Hits, The Essential, ecc.). Ma di certo in prossimità di dicembre il fenomeno si intensifica notevolmente. In tal proposito si muove già la SonyBMG mettendo sul mercato una nuova raccolta dell'usignolo Mariah Carey.

Questa volta dal vasto repertorio si prediligono le ballate; vero punto di forza della cantante americana (Huntington, New York, 27 marzo 1970).

"The Ballads" quindi si muove in questo senso mettendo insieme una dopo l'altra, il suo meglio; 'Hero', 'I Still Believe', 'Always Be My Baby', 'My All', ecc. uno showcase in piena regola dove la Carey mette in mostra la sua elasticità vocale e la sensibilità che da sempre la contraddistingue e che si esalta in queste canzoni.

Nei diciotto brani anche alcune collaborazioni importanti come quella con i Westlife ('Against All Odds'), Usher (How Much), Boyz II Man (One Sweet Day) e Luther Vandross ('Endless Love').

E a dimostrazione di quanto detto inizialmente, anche la bonus track of 'All I Want For Christmas'!! Buon Natale.

La multi-platinata carriera di Santana è fuori da ogni tentativo di classificazione, e questa nuova antologia si manifesta perfettamente tra le svariate esperienze musicali attraversate dal chitarrista messicano.

Questo nuovo progetto si divide in due metà, creando due distinte esperienze d'ascolto. Il primo disco raccoglie 14 canzoni tutte vocali; 'Let There Be Light', 'Brotherhood', 'Serpents and Doves', ecc. Mentre il secondo disco si basa sulla vasta produzione strumentale, ed è composto di 14 tracce: 'Marine', 'Full Moon', 'Blues for Salvador', ecc.

E Tina Turner è sempre Tina Turner!! e allora in attesa del nuovo album previsto per il 2009, ecco arrivare questo "Tina", ennesima compilation, dove il passato miscelato col recente, si mischia al nuovo.

Già della discografia di Tina con Ike, si è fatta manbassa in tutti i modi (all'incirca 250 album). Della sua come solista aveva già dato: 'Simply The Best' 1991 e 'All The Best' datato 2004. Ora allora in attesa del nuovo album previsto per il 2009, ecco arrivare questo "Tina", ennesima compilation, dove il passato miscelato col recente, si mischia al nuovo.

Ora ai fedelissimi fans della leonessa dell'r&b si chiede un altro sforzo. E ecco attesa dell'annunciato nuovo album, ecco pubblicata compilation 'Tina' appunto, dove a rendere interessante il tutto ci pensano due nuove tracce; 'It Would Be a Crime' e 'I'm Ready', canzoni che non spostano di una virgola le cose fatte in passato, ma che ci riportano una 'Turner' esattamente come l'avevamo l'asciata (musicalmente parlando). Il resto....qualcosa di vecchio 'River Deep-Mountain High' e 'Nutbrush City Limits', e alcuni grandi hits degli anni 90; 'Steamy Windows', 'Better Be Good to Me', 'What You Get Is What You See e 'What's Love Got to Do with It'.

Tina Turner's new CD "Tina" is a new collection of some of her previous hits. I'm a huge Tina Turner fan so I was honored to get a chance to review it. The 18 track CD contains 2 bonus tracks that have never been released.

I've been blasting her new CD in my car and at home since I got it. It's good to have my favorite songs on one disk. I can't stop singing the lyrics to "Steamy Windows, "Better Be Good to Me," "What's Love Got to Do With It," "Private Dancer," "We Don't Need Another Hero," "I Can't Stand the Rain," "Addicted to Love," "The Best" and "Proud Mary."

Prima compilation ufficiale per l'ex 'Eurythmics' Annie Lennox; "The Annie Lennox Collection" relativa alla sua produzione come solista.

E' passato poco meno di un anno dall'utimo lavoro 'Songs of Mass Destruction' e la Sony pubblica questo 'The Annie Lennox Collection', dove trovano posto tutti i successi della cantante Inglese relativi alla sua personale discografia solista.

Tutte le tracce sono estratte dai suoi 4 lavori come solista, distribuiti dal 1992 al 2007 a partire da 'Diva' del 1992, 'Medusa' 1995, 'Bare' 2003 e l'ultimo 'Songs of Mass Destruction' del 2007 da cui provengono; 'Sing' e 'Dark Road'.

"The Annie Lennox Collection" è una bella raccolta, diciamo.....indispensabile per tutti quelli che dell'ex 'Eurythmics' si fossero (negli ultimi anni) distratti un attimo e persi qualcosa!!

CD Review: Foreigner - No End in Sight: the Very Best of Foreigner

I 'Foreigner', pop-rock band anglo-americana, pubblica una ricca doppia raccolta 'No End in Sight: the Very Best of Foreigner' dove del loro meglio non manca proprio niente.

Il vero grande riscontro di pubblico e di vendite i 'Foreigner' lo ottennero veramente come forestieri. Fu oltre oceano infatti che la band di 'Mick Jones' (Chitarra e leader del gruppo) e del cantante 'Lou Gramm' ottennero i più grandi riconoscimenti.

Per i 'Foreigner' si può tranquillamente parlare di (supergruppo!) All'inizio infatti erano molti i musicisti di spicco che con Jones ex 'Spooky Tooth'e Gramm ex 'Black Sheep', formarono l'ossatura della band. L'ex-King Crimson Ian McDonald, Dennis Elliott, Al Greenwood, e Ed Gagliardi.

Dal debutto con l'album 'Foreigner' del 1977, fino all'ultimo 'Mr. Moonlight' i Foreigner hanno saputo mantenere una qualità artistica di alto livello, sfornando ottimi dischi di un rock trasversale che piaceva a tutti, ma che guardava anche alle classifiche, dove anno piazzato negli anni alcune memorabili canzoni; "Feels Like the First Time", "Cold as Ice", all'inizio, e a seguire; "Hot Blooded", "Double Vision", "Blue Morning Blue Day", fino ad arrivare alle top hits anni 80; "Urgent", "Waiting for a Girl Like You", "Juke Box Hero" e alla splendida gospel inspirata ballad "I Want to Know What Love Is", scritta da Jones, ovviamente presente qui.

I Foreigner (perso ultimamente per strada Gramm), sono ancora attivi con concerti in tutto il mondo, documentati dal recente DVD Foreigner - 'Alive and Rockin'.

Questo Greatest Hit (…and 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs) dei Dream Theater, esce sotto etichetta 'Rhino', una divisione dell’Atlantic, vecchia label della band, attualmente sotto contratto con la Roadrunner. È del tutto evidente, che nell’ultimo contratto firmato dal gruppo con l’Atlantic, ci fosse una clausola che prevedesse la pubblicazione di un “Best of”.
Sul booklet si legge che sono stati gli stessi Dream Theater a scegliere le canzoni da inserire nll’album. Bè, stentiamo a crederci vista la proposta, divisa tra remix, versioni edit, e mix alternativi delle canzoni presenti sui rispettivi album.

Due per la precisione i cd: The Dark Side, il lato più Metal in senso stretto; The Light Side, l’aspetto più melodico. Nel primo spiccano 'Pull Me Under', 'Take the Time' e 'Misunderstood'. Il secondo invece apre con 'Another Day', 'Hollow Years', e va a chiudere con 'Disappear'. Difficile pensare ad una raccolta dei Dream Theater senza le lunghe suite, ma questo è Greatest Hit (…and 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs).

Review:
Dream Theater will soon release a 2-CD set entitled Greatest Hit (…and 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs) on Rhino Records. And it truly is a wonderful 22-song compilation. The title is definitely appropriate, as it lays emphasis on their only top 10 radio hit, “Pull Me Under,” in a humorous manner.
It’s good when a progressive rock band gives their best-of compilation a witty title, one with kind of a facetious intent. Other examples, like Pink Floyd’s A Collection of Great Dance Songs and Zappa’s blatant mockery, Worst of the Mothers, come to mind, also Joni Mitchell’s Hits and Misses (the “misses” being my preferred choice to listen to usually). After all, album oriented performers and rock bands, especially prog bands, are admired more for their all-encompassing projects than for individual songs. It’s such a tedious endeavor to create an album perching certain songs on a pedestal above others, especially when the band has such a vast discography of music to choose from.

However, compilations can be an excellent marketing ploy as well. It often takes the listening public a little longer to gear their minds up for music that’s not as catchy and as simple in form as other styles, like typical rock or pop; so a “best of” set can be the ideal approach to get the open-minded listener acquainted with what they’ve been missing over the years. And when it comes to Dream Theater, if you aren't acquainted with them yet, then you’ve been missing out on a magnitude of quality music played by brilliant musicians.

There’s a lot to satisfy the Dream Theater fanatic on the compilation as well. Three songs from the Words And Images album are included, remixed by producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Rush, Dream Theater, etc.). Also included are single B sides and previously unreleased tracks.

Disc one is titled “The Dark Side.” It’s primarily the heavier and more metal side of the band, songs that enter an ominous realm amid extra muscle and crunch. Disc two, “The Light Side,” embraces the band’s softer side, and is basically the more melodic and vocal material. But all in all, Greatest Hit is the ideal paradigm of the music of Dream Theater, spanning 1991 through 1995, only excluding material from their debut, When Dream And Day Unite, and the most recent, Systematic Chaos.

East London heavy metal veterans Iron Maiden release 'Somewhere Back In Time', a compilation celebrating their first seven studio albums and one live album, recorded between 1980 and 1989. By helping to shape their genre (influencing most metal acts since) and selling millions of records, the band have achieved legendary status. Including classics such as '2 Minutes To Midnight' and 'Run To The Hills', this is a must for rockers everywhere.

E' finita da tempo ormai l'avventura dei Cranberries di Dolores O'Riordan, (Che sulla copertina del cd appare giovane e bionda), ma come sempre accade, la musica continua a vivere la propria vita, indipendentemente dallo scioglimento delle band. E attraverso questi dischi antologici come Gold - doppio Cd con il meglio della band Irlandese - che è possibile apprezzare a distanza di tempo il sound perfetto e innovativo dei Cranberries, i colori della musica irlandese contaminati con il rock degli anni 90, e quel modo insolito di cantare a singhiozzo di Dolores, che contribuì non poco a portare attenzione a questi quattro ragazzi venuti delle verdi terre dell'Irlanda . Dreams, Pretty, Linger e l'hits Zombie dal primo disco, Salvation, Hollywood, Promises, Just My Imagination e Stars, dal secondo ne sono l'esempio lampante. Quest'ultimo brano, diete il nome al primo ed unico greatest dei Cranberries prima d'ora: Stars appunto, uscito del 2002.
