E Tina Turner è sempre Tina Turner!! e allora in attesa del nuovo album previsto per il 2009, ecco arrivare questo "Tina", ennesima compilation, dove il passato miscelato col recente, si mischia al nuovo.

Già della discografia di Tina con Ike, si è fatta manbassa in tutti i modi (all'incirca 250 album). Della sua come solista aveva già dato: 'Simply The Best' 1991 e 'All The Best' datato 2004. Ora allora in attesa del nuovo album previsto per il 2009, ecco arrivare questo "Tina", ennesima compilation, dove il passato miscelato col recente, si mischia al nuovo.

Ora ai fedelissimi fans della leonessa dell'r&b si chiede un altro sforzo. E ecco attesa dell'annunciato nuovo album, ecco pubblicata compilation 'Tina' appunto, dove a rendere interessante il tutto ci pensano due nuove tracce; 'It Would Be a Crime' e 'I'm Ready', canzoni che non spostano di una virgola le cose fatte in passato, ma che ci riportano una 'Turner' esattamente come l'avevamo l'asciata (musicalmente parlando). Il resto....qualcosa di vecchio 'River Deep-Mountain High' e 'Nutbrush City Limits', e alcuni grandi hits degli anni 90; 'Steamy Windows', 'Better Be Good to Me', 'What You Get Is What You See e 'What's Love Got to Do with It'.

Tina Turner's new CD "Tina" is a new collection of some of her previous hits. I'm a huge Tina Turner fan so I was honored to get a chance to review it. The 18 track CD contains 2 bonus tracks that have never been released.

I've been blasting her new CD in my car and at home since I got it. It's good to have my favorite songs on one disk. I can't stop singing the lyrics to "Steamy Windows, "Better Be Good to Me," "What's Love Got to Do With It," "Private Dancer," "We Don't Need Another Hero," "I Can't Stand the Rain," "Addicted to Love," "The Best" and "Proud Mary."

CD Review: John Hiatt - Same Old Man

Il titolo di una vecchia canzone di 'Steve Earle' esemplifica perfettamente la situazione: è probabile che 'John Hiatt' non sia più l'umorale 'Angry Young Man' di un tempo. Ma in quanto a capacità di scavare a fondo nei sentimenti, nulla è mutato. 'Same Old Man', ultimo album del songwriter americano, è un viaggio nella memoria di un uomo che ha dedicato la propria esistenza alla musica.

Con la voce emozionante di sempre e un bel tappeto sonoro roots-rock e blues, 'John Hiatt' alterna storie di vita on the road (Old Days), d'amore e di relazioni umane intense (Love You Again e What Love Can Do), ricordi giovanili e riflessioni sul presente (Cherry Road e Our Times). 'Same Old Man' riporta 'John Hiatt' ad alti livelli espressivi e ha il merito di far riscoprire il piacere ammaliante e la suggestione senza tempo delle ballate rock.

Per quanto riguarda il DVD, sono diverse registrazioni effettuate dal vivo in quello che sembra essere uno studio televisivo da qualche parte nel mondo.

John Hiatt's conversational lyrics sound off-the-cuff, which means they likely resulted from many hours of labor. The work was worth it, because "Same Old Man" ranks with the best music of Hiatt's 34-year recording career.
He sings about love in the opening round and love on the ropes, about food and paper cuts and "doppelganger caterwauling." "Same Old Man" is sweet but not sentimental, tuneful, honest and very, very funny.
On his first release since 2005's fine "Master of Disaster," Hiatt produced and engineered himself, and he puts his voice front and center. As always, Hiatt sings like someone straining to complete the final set of the night at the local roadhouse. The raw vocals are a perfect match for such songs as "Hurt My Baby," where pain is palpable as Hiatt delivers the chorus.
He's supported by bass, drums and Luther Dickinson, who plays guitar and mandolin and provides an ideal counterpoint to the vocals by making every note count. Hiatt's daughter, Lilly, contributes lovely harmony on two songs.
Dad delivers his droll lyrics as if they're throwaways, which makes them even better. "I'm a long shot, baby," he sings. "But they do come in." "Same Old Man" laps the field.

CD Review: Walter Becker - Circus Money

Ritorno discografico del 50% degli 'Steely Dan' Walter Becker.

Fine produttore, compositore e chitarrista, Walter Becker non è molto attivo al di fuori degli Steely Dan. Infatti questo "Circus Money" è la sua seconda uscita senza Donald Fagen in 36 anni di carriera, passati al servizio della musica in compagnia del compare. E che musica!!!

Il gioco d'azzardo, la disperazione e altre storie della condizione umana, sono i temi trattati da Becker nel disco. Mentre sul fronte musicale, le canzoni sono scritte a due mani con l'ex marito di Joni Mitchell "Larry Klein", che ne cura anche la produzione.

Per la musica, Becker e Klein, si avvalgono di alcuni musicisti a dirsi poco stellari; come batterista Keith Carlock, il chitarrista Jon Herington e tastierista Ted Baker e il drummer Jim Beard, che contribuiscono al lavoro dando un'impronta meno complessa e più intima al sound, allontanadolo così in modo netto, dalle armonie jezzate tipiche degli Steely Dan. L'unico neo del disco è senza dubbio la voce di Becker, un problema decisamente insormontabile, e cui lui cerca di sopperire focalizzando il tutto sulla musica e sui testi.

Arriving at Steely Dan's routinely cautious rate - it's been 14 years since the co-founder's last solo album - Circus Money comes swathed in reggae rhythms. But you have to wait until the humdrum opener Door Number Two has wandered off before Becker hits his groove. Bob is Not Your Uncle Anymore, the title track, and Somebody's Saturday Night are well up to Dan standard - melodic, funky and as smart as you like. The tune-free God's Eye View and the previously mentioned opener are not, showing up Becker's lacklustre vocals. Within this decent 13-track set lurks a very fine six-track mini-album.

Review:
On their third album, baggy revivalists the Music's ploy of hiding their indistinct image behind a wall of aurally arresting tracks is laid bare. Consequently, their tinny, Madchester-rewinding sound feels as dated as a Day-Glo “smiley” T-shirt. The formula (tuneful feedback over looped drums) is pedestrian and has yet to acquire the serrated edge and nihilistic glamour of Primal Scream's XTRMNTR. Tellingly, the best moment comes when they step out of their comfort zone on the claustrophobic, winningly Radiohead-like Idle. It is something to think about for album number four.

Aimee Mann - @#%& Smilers

'@#%& Smilers' è il settimo nuovo lavoro per la songwriter americana 'Aimee Mann'. Il disco esce a tre anni di distanza dal concept 'The Forgotten Arm', e contiene tredici canzoni che si addentrano nei lati più nascosti della gente, raccontando storie di persone comuni, lontane anni luce dall'essere persone di successo. Sguardi che consumano un bicchiere di whiskey, occhi che scrutano orizzonti lontani, fronti invecchiate, malinconia, il tutto raccontato con una poetica cruda e lucida. Storie di gente comune, storie nostre. Musicalmente i brani sono un delizioso affresco dolente e introspettivo che prende forma tanto dalla struttura delle canzoni di Neil Young o dei Beatles, quanto dagli arrangiamenti e dalla sensibilità tipica delle migliori cantautrici d’oltre Oceano, su tutte Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell e Tori Amos. In scaletta anche il bellissimo brano ‘True Believer’, scritto insieme all’amico di vecchia data Grant Lee Phillips ed il duetto con Sean Hayes dei ‘Ballantines’.

This CD was difficult for me to review for several reasons. First, I was a Mann-fan from back in her days with ‘Til Tuesday. Second, I lost track of her until a little over a year or so ago, when she sang on a Jim White song, “Static In The Radio." I wasn’t familiar with her name after this long absence, and I’d either never heard or never noticed Jim White’s name, but that particular song caught my attention.

I guess I’m like a lot of people today who buy music. Gone are the days when I’d run out and buy a new album or CD based on the fact that I like the group and they have a new CD out. Actually, those days have been gone for a good 20 years or so. Like many people, I was “once burned, twice shy.” When the record companies began putting out CDs with one or two decent songs and the rest dreck, that’s when I became a careful shopper. After getting burned two or three times (OK, I was a little slow to catch on), I began scrutinizing the CDs before committing myself.

When I heard “Static,” though, I sat up and paid attention; then I read up on both White and Mann. I still wasn’t sold on White, mainly because I wasn’t familiar with any of his past work. But when I read that Mann had been the singer for ‘Til Tuesday (which I’d forgotten), I decided to give this CD a try.

Having it to do over again, I wouldn’t have picked up Smilers. I should have listened to my earlier cautions on buying. Not that this CD is bad; don’t get me wrong on that. I still think Mann has a terrific voice, her arrangements are well written and well executed. But the lyrics, while catchy, are bland. The songs on this CD make excellent pop music; however, I don’t usually listen to pop. It’s not worth it (to me) to wade through hours of pop music waiting for that one or two kernels of meaningful music. Also, if a song has lyrics, it’s important to me that they me meaningful, or amusing, or funny, or that they strike me in some other way. That they have an impact, to put it clearly.

I’m still in love with Aimee Mann’s voice but she’ll have to make big strides in her lyrics for me to pick up another CD by her in the future.

Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer

Dopo essersi dedicati ai rispettivi progetti paralleli, Dan Boeckner e Spencer Krug, si sono ritrovati per dare vita al secondo lavoro dei 'Wolf Parade': 'At Mount Zoomer'. questo nuovo disco è stato concepito durante lunghe jam session e improvvisazioni all’interno della chiesa di Montreal, di proprietà degli Arcade Fire. Il concetto con il quale è stato registrato, è quello di evitare categoricamente la ricerca della canzone ‘singolo’, che avrebbe direzionato l'intero lavoro in terre a loro non gradite. Già l'ottimo 'Apologies to the Queen Mary' datato 2005, viveva di alti e bassi. Quì invece il nuovo lavoro impressiona per essere più omogeneo, compatto e alternativo. Ecco quindi che in 'At Mount Zoomer' trovano spazio le sperimentazioni, le trame più complesse ed un lavoro più importante e deciso da parte di ogni componente del gruppo. Un deciso passo avanti quindi che conferma i Wolf Parade, come una delle band più importanti e ricercate nel panorama indie-rock internazionale!!.

The enigmatic and always-erudite Wolf Parade (who count among their songwriting ranks Spencer Krug of Sunset Rubdown and Frog Eyes, and Dan Boeckner of Handsome Furs) release their second full-length, 'At Mount Zoomer' to great anticipation. After the woozy folk anarchy of their debut (2006's 'Apologies To The Queen Mary'), this is the sound of a band pushing the envelope, exploring newer, more progressive sounds than before. The band jammed in isolation for many months before actually recording anything, lending the record a definite sense of assuredness and accomplished glee.

Weezer - Weezer (The Red Album)

Review:
Early word on the sixth album from Weezer--and their third self-titled record, although fans, sensibly, are referring to it as 'The Red Album'--is that this is their 'experimental' record. Luckily, Rivers Cuomo isn’t interested in penning his own jazz odyssey; for him, experimental is just finding cunning ways to nuance Weezer’s stock-in-trade--crunchy, candy-sweet guitars and vocal harmonies--with new pop tricks. The sardonic lyric of "Pork and Beans" hints at a new direction: "Timabaland knows the way to reach the top of the charts," Cuomo sings, "maybe if I work with him I can perfect the art". Actually, Timbaland’s not on board, but producer Jacknife Lee brings a variety of drum machines and electronics, and Weezer rise to the challenge with some generally inspired messing around. "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Theme)" sees Cuomo adopt a gangsta rap slur over screaming sirens, while elsewhere, the other three Weezer members take a turn at the microphone. But it’s Cuomo’s songs that are the winners--notably "Heart Songs", a tribute to the songs that "never feel wrong" that swoops from melodic schmaltz to grunge scuzz with a deft invocation of Nirvana. Skip to the bonus tracks, meanwhile, for a great cover of "The Weight" that takes The Band’s original and drenches it in chundering guitars.

Ligabue - Secondo Tempo

Già doppio disco di platino con le solo prenotazioni, ecco pubblicata la seconda parte del primo 'Best of' di Ligabue: 'Secondo Tempo'.

Questa seconda raccolta, ha lo stesso formato di 'Primo Tempo': un cd e un dvd con i brani del periodo artistico che va dal 1997 al 2005, (tutti i singoli usciti da “Su e giù da un palco” a “Nome e Cognome”). Tre i brani inediti contenuti in 'Secondo Tempo': 'Il centro del mondo', (prodotto da Corrado Rustici), attualmente primo nell'airplay radiofonico, 'Il mio pensiero' e 'Ho ancora la forza' (entrambi prodotti da Fabrizio Barbacci ). Quest’ultimo, scritto insieme a Francesco Guccini. La versione digitale in vendita su I-Tunes, ha una bonus track in omaggio 'Non fai più male', già b-side del singolo “Una vita da mediano” .

3 Doors Down - 3 Doors Down

3 Doors Down, un altro ottimo album dalla brillante rock band dei 3 Doors Down. A giudicare dai primi due brani pubblicati 'Citizen/Soldier' e 'It's Not My Time', entrambi basate sul tema dei soldati impegnati a combattere la guerra in Iraq, ci riporta immediatamente alle canzoni del loro primo album, che riprendevano anni fà lo stesso increscioso tema, e musicalmente parlando invece, segna un ritorno indietro al loro suono originale. E se il loro primo album fu una vera sorpresa, questo - sulla stessa falsa riga - non dovrebbe deludere.

Questo quarto disco intitolato solo, 3 Doors Down, offre la più forte raccolta della loro carriera, e per fortuna loro, abbandona il sound 'mainstream' dei dischi precedenti e riconducibile a band come (Nickelback e Puddle Of Mudd) anche se (vedi la vita) il batterista Daniel Adair è entrato nei Nickelback, sostituito da Greg Upchurch, venuto dai Puddle Of Mudd).

Nonstante gli scambi di batterista il disco suona hard al punto giusto. Già l'iniziale 'Train', spara duro e anche le già citate 'Citizen/Soldier', 'It's Not My Time', 'Give It To Me' sono sulla stessa riga. Il primo momento di pausa è con 'Pages', una ballad intensa e coinvolgente. Nel complesso un album pulsante e pieno belle melodie e di energia.

3 Doors Down, "3 Doors Down" (Universal Republic): Fist-pumping arena rock is a favorite target for critics, who remain somewhat baffled as to why these bands continue to fill major venues and play upward of 300 shows a year. Truth be told, the post-grunge scene sounds increasingly bland and repetitive — making it hard for any band of that genre to stand out.

On their self-titled fourth disc, 3 Doors Down offer the strongest collection of their career, and fortunately separate themselves a bit from the mainstream rock crowd — think Nickelback and Puddle of Mudd for clarity (coincidentally, former drummer Daniel Adair left to join Nickelback and his replacement, Greg Upchurch, is a former member of Puddle of Mudd). 3 Doors Down maintain their fiery mix of southern hard rock and bic-lighter ballads with pulsating energy.

There's no denying a slew of arena-ready standouts, including the muscular "Train," the uplifting "It's The Only One You've Got," and the 80s-ish charm of "Runaway." Lest we forget the hard-rockin' ladies, they're sure to fall for the soft touch of "Let Me Be Myself" and "Your Arms Feel Like Home."

The band also hits a grand slam with lead single "It's Not My Time," a track that's already dominating rock radio with its ridiculously catchy riff and crowd-pleasing chorus. 3 Doors Down aren't going to win over any harsh critics with this effort, but they probably have another platinum seller and sold-out tour on their hands.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Disc closer "She Don't Want The World" is a moody tale of longing backed by minimal guitar and slick overdubs that sounds nothing like 3 Doors Down, who should try branching out like this more often.

Alanis Morissette sta per tornare sulla scena musicale con un nuovo album 'Flavors of Entanglement'. Dopo alcuni dischi decisamente mediocri, eccola finalmente con un nuovo cd all'altezza del suo esordio 'Jagged Little Pill'. In questo lavoro Alanis risulta più matura, e sembra conoscere con sicurezza la nuova direzione musicale intrapresa, al punto che tutto l'album ne risente in modo positivo.

Alanis è andata in studio e ha messo in musica tutte quelle sensazioni legate al privato, riuscendo così a creare un diverso approccio al songwriting, che questa volta "così come era stato per 'Jagged', pare abbia funzionato al meglio). Lo standard delle 11 tracce, risulta una versatile raccolta di brani pop rock, dove lei incorpora la sua voce nelle chitarre e nei sintetizzatori, cosa abbastanza nuova nel suo sound, ma con interessanti nuovi risultati, come ad esempio su 'Straitjacket' o 'Versions of Violence'.

Il primo singolo già uscito; 'Underneath', è uno dei tanti brani che tocca la sua rottura con Reynolds. La canzone inizia con parole che sottolineano il disaccordo e l'inizio a una separazione. "Look at us break our bonds in this kitchen/ Look at us rallying all our defenses/ Look at us waging war in our bedroom," riflessione introspettiva, prima di aprirsi in un intenso e azzeccato chorus vocale pop. Un album quindi bello e emotivamente sentito, che suona inevitabilmente autobiografico, in quanto solo in questo stato d'animo la Morissette sembra in grado di dare il meglio.

Alanis Morissette is about to come back on the scene. After several years of mediocre tunes that didn't chart as well, she's returned to the pissed off heartbroken Alanis we met on Jagged Little Pill. Only this time around she's more mature, knows the musical direction she wants to take and is doing so with her latest release Flavors of Entanglement due out in U.S. stores June 10th, June 2nd internationally, and May 30th in Germany. Many of the songs have been previewed on her recent tour with Matchbox20.

Alanis has roughed it the past year. After being engaged to actor Ryan Reynolds, and amongst other things she's refused to speak of in recent interviews, she's taken that heartache and put it down on paper. Being quoted to have written "in the present instead of retrospect," Alanis went into the studio and wrote what she was feeling at that time, a different approach to songwriting that may have just worked out for the better.

The standard 11 track compilation is a versatile collection. She's incorporated her unique voice against guitar driven licks overdubbed with interesting beats and synths, such as found on "Versions of Violence." The song is a mix of angry guitar rhythms in the chorus with a doubled vocal while the verses use a deep vocal tone against various keyboard sounds. "Versions of Violence" is the modern day angry Alanis and we wouldn't have her any other way.

The first single may slightly touch her breakup with Reynolds. "Underneath" starts with lyrics suggesting a disagreement and a start to a split up. "Look at us break our bonds in this kitchen/ Look at us rallying all our defenses/ Look at us waging war in our bedroom," she starts before crashing into an intense vocal pop chorus.

Il disco è un grandissimo capolavoro di musica minimalista, dove su tutto risalta la profonda voce di Neil, che riempie ed emoziona come non mai. I brani sono di altissimo livello, su tutte 'Pretty Amazing Grace', 'Another Day That Time Forgot' (featuring Natalie Maines), e 'No Words', che passeranno sicuramente alla storia come piccoli capolavori. Ormai non si contano più gli album realizzati da Diamond nella sua lunghissima carriera, ma quel che è certo, è che la qualità artistica non è mai venuta meno, e a differenza di tanti altri colleghi americani, lui di passi falsi non ne ha mai fatti!!

In questo 'Home Before Dark' oltre al citato Rubin alla produzione, troviamo illustre collaborazioni come le Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines, e due quinti degli Heartbreakers, Mike Campbell alle chitarre e Benmont Tench alle keyboards.

After a four-year break, Usher's fifth set is bursting with grown man, true-to-life tales like leaving his player ways behind ("Before I Met You"), falling in love ("Something Special," "Lifetime" and the title track), making love ("This Ain't Sex") and having a child ("Prayer for You," featuring a weeping Usher Raymond V, his new baby son). Grown-up relationships drive "His Mistakes," about a woman who is scarred by a past fling, the piano-and-drum-laden "Best Thing" featuring Jay-Z and "What's a Man to Do," which finds Usher belting about loving two women at once.
