The Coral, la band di Hoylake da alle stampe la loro prima raccolta; 'Singles Collection'. Un doppio cd con rare tracce, brani dal vivo e un inedito; 'Being Somebody Else'.

In attesa del nuovo album previsto per la fine del 2008, ecco pubblicato il 15 Settembre, la prima raccolta ufficiale per la band inglese dei 'The Coral'; 'Singles Collection'.

Il progetto prevede un doppio cd con tutti i singoli pubblicati fino ad oggi, rare tracce, brani dal vivo e un inedito; 'Being Somebody Else'.

La raccolta che sarà doppia, oltre ai singoli classici, avrà anche un secondo cd con diversi inediti, qualche b-sides ed alcune registrazioni dal vivo. Nella tracklist un brano inedito; 'Being Somebody Else'. Il doppio cd è stato pubblicato l'8 settembre 2008.

Review:
No other band from Britpop's second wave of guitar-bands has produced such an impressive body of work as The Coral, as this superlative compilation ably demonstrates.

In places, their restless desire to explore can lead them into strange musical hybrids, but there's no denying James Skelly's songwriting talents, nor the band's apparently limitless grasp of whatever mode they alight upon. They tackle offbeat organ ska-pop ("Dreaming of You"), folk-rock ("Liezah"), Morricone-esque pop exotica ("Don't Think You're The First"), strident psych-rock ("Goodbye"), haunted western soundscaping ("Shadows Fall"), twangy polka-pop ("Bill McCai"), sweeping orchestral pop (the new single, "Being Somebody Else"), a more original Lennon-McCartney pastiche than any Oasis track ("Jacqueline"), and several songs that conjure the irresistible from the seemingly inconsequential. A bonus disc of mysteries and rarities extends their reach further.

CD Review: Daniel Powter - Under The Radar

Dopo il grande successo con la canzone 'Bad Day' del 2005, e l'album omonimo, ritorna 'Daniel Powter' con un nuovissimo album che si chiama 'Under The Radar', 11 nuove canzoni + una bonus track di 'Bay Day' (Live In Vienna), solo per il mercato (UK).

Prodotto da Linda Perry (Pink, Courtney Love Christina Aguilera), il cd è qualcosa di più di un disco di musica pop. In questo lavoro Powter si rinventa ottimo autore e interprete di una manciata di ottimi brani, si destinati alle radio, ma con quel qual'cosa in più lo pone al di sopra di tanti altri artisti del panorama pop. Specialmente quelli americani, a volte troppo simili tra loro (tanto per non sbagliare).

Bella anche la scelta di 'Next Plane Home' come primo singolo, che ha l'arduo compito di bissare il precedente 'Bad Day'.

'Here Is What Is' risulta essere un viaggio sonoro alle fonti della musica, con l'ausilio dell’arte della registrazione.

Viaggio sonico alle sorgenti dell’arte con l'ausilio delle tecniche più innovative della registrazione. Considerata la carriera più che ventennale di Daniel Lanois come produttore (U2, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson) l’idea non è per niente peregrina. Il risultato però, dopo un anno di session, lo è un po' meno: risaputo nell’utilizzo del B&N o dei viraggi di colore, didascalico nelle spiegazioni tecniche e simpatico solo a sprazzi. Ad esempio quando Lanois, Eno, Bono e The Edge sembrano quattro pensionati in gita a Fez.

Extra Un paio di canzoni filmate in sala d’incisione con più interesse per le immagini (split screen, alternanza bianco e nerocolore) che per le melodie.

Review:
I believe this is the soundtrack to a film that Daniel Lanois made with U2 (not on the album), Brian Eno and others last year. It starts and is interspersed with various snatches of conversation between Lanois and Eno which breaks up the flow somewhat. The music itself is a strange hybrid of country/folk and electronica with the occasional ethereal jazz tinge, especially on the standout track, Lovechild. It is one of those albums that reward patient listening but would also not be out of place as background music at a dinner party. Make no mistake, this is grown up music and won't appeal to many under 20 years old, but for the rest of us we can appreciate a master craftsman at work with some excellent friends along for the ride.

CD Review: Ry Cooder - I, Flathead

I, Flathead, chiude la trilogia di una novela californiana iniziata con 'Chavez Ravine' e 'My Name Is Buddy'.

Terzo atto della novela californiana iniziata con Chavez Ravine e proseguita con My Name Is Buddy, questo nuovo lavoro del cantante chitarrista, è un libro cd basato sulla figura ironico-nostalgicafantastica di Kash Buk, leader dei Klowns, musicista e fanatico di corse d’auto. La trasfigurazione serve a Cooder per rimpiangere il tempo andato e perdersi, è il caso di dirlo, in una brughiera di country, blues, r’n’r e latin pop dai contorni sfuggenti. Il tono è dimesso, due dita di polvere valgono più di qualsiasi brillantino, la radio della mente è a valvole come quella dell’amico Bob lassù sui Grandi Laghi. Progetto ha senza dubbio una forte originalità realizzativa, ma ci riserva anche una grande frustrazione all’ascolto.

CD Review Rock: Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul

Gli 'Oasis' sono definitivamente bolliti o no!!... A smentire tutti ci pensa 'Dig Out Your Soul', un disco azzeccatissimo, fresco, rock, e pieno di bellissimo brani.

Questa volta i due fratellini Gallagher mettono insieme un disco ben fatto, anche se molto influenzato dall’opera dei fab4, soprattutto quelli psichedelici di metà carriera. Ma questo ormai non è un problema. Dai quattro di Liverpol hanna pescato tutti!! Ciò nonostante (o forse proprio grazie a questo) 'Dig Out Your Soul' è un buonissimo album, scritto, registrato e prodotto in totale assenza di droghe. (così quanto dichiarato dai fratelli, che tra l’altro hanno cominciato anche una vera e propria campagna contro l’uso di stupefacenti.

Molte delle canzoni hanno, nelle liriche, riferimenti mistici e spirituali in una sorta di palese manifestazione di paura e fragilità. L’inquietudine degli eccessi e la debolezza dello spirito, contrapposte alla concretezza della maturità, con tutti i fremiti e le rinunce che questa comporta, sono i temi più evidenti delle nuove canzoni del gruppo.

Musicalmente, invece, il disco si basa su basi più concrete, alcune tipicamente British con ballate ben congeniate e scorrevoli come 'I'm Outta Time' e 'Soldier On' scritte da Liam, e qualche venatura progressive anni 70 come in 'High Horse Lady' o 'To Be Where There's Life' (di Gem Archer). Un suono Beat della più bell’acqua, prodotto dai Gallagher assieme al fidato David Sardy, che riporta sulla giusta direzione una band che l’ha troppe volte persa. Bentornato al Brit-Pop.

CD Review: John Hiatt - Same Old Man

Il titolo di una vecchia canzone di 'Steve Earle' esemplifica perfettamente la situazione: è probabile che 'John Hiatt' non sia più l'umorale 'Angry Young Man' di un tempo. Ma in quanto a capacità di scavare a fondo nei sentimenti, nulla è mutato. 'Same Old Man', ultimo album del songwriter americano, è un viaggio nella memoria di un uomo che ha dedicato la propria esistenza alla musica.

Con la voce emozionante di sempre e un bel tappeto sonoro roots-rock e blues, 'John Hiatt' alterna storie di vita on the road (Old Days), d'amore e di relazioni umane intense (Love You Again e What Love Can Do), ricordi giovanili e riflessioni sul presente (Cherry Road e Our Times). 'Same Old Man' riporta 'John Hiatt' ad alti livelli espressivi e ha il merito di far riscoprire il piacere ammaliante e la suggestione senza tempo delle ballate rock.

Per quanto riguarda il DVD, sono diverse registrazioni effettuate dal vivo in quello che sembra essere uno studio televisivo da qualche parte nel mondo.

Review:
John Hiatt's conversational lyrics sound off-the-cuff, which means they likely resulted from many hours of labor. The work was worth it, because "Same Old Man" ranks with the best music of Hiatt's 34-year recording career.
He sings about love in the opening round and love on the ropes, about food and paper cuts and "doppelganger caterwauling." "Same Old Man" is sweet but not sentimental, tuneful, honest and very, very funny.
On his first release since 2005's fine "Master of Disaster," Hiatt produced and engineered himself, and he puts his voice front and center. As always, Hiatt sings like someone straining to complete the final set of the night at the local roadhouse. The raw vocals are a perfect match for such songs as "Hurt My Baby," where pain is palpable as Hiatt delivers the chorus.
He's supported by bass, drums and Luther Dickinson, who plays guitar and mandolin and provides an ideal counterpoint to the vocals by making every note count. Hiatt's daughter, Lilly, contributes lovely harmony on two songs.
Dad delivers his droll lyrics as if they're throwaways, which makes them even better. "I'm a long shot, baby," he sings. "But they do come in." "Same Old Man" laps the field.

CD Review: Walter Becker - Circus Money

Ritorno discografico del 50% degli 'Steely Dan' Walter Becker.

Fine produttore, compositore e chitarrista, Walter Becker non è molto attivo al di fuori degli Steely Dan. Infatti questo "Circus Money" è la sua seconda uscita senza Donald Fagen in 36 anni di carriera, passati al servizio della musica in compagnia del compare. E che musica!!!

Il gioco d'azzardo, la disperazione e altre storie della condizione umana, sono i temi trattati da Becker nel disco. Mentre sul fronte musicale, le canzoni sono scritte a due mani con l'ex marito di Joni Mitchell "Larry Klein", che ne cura anche la produzione.

Per la musica, Becker e Klein, si avvalgono di alcuni musicisti a dirsi poco stellari; come batterista Keith Carlock, il chitarrista Jon Herington e tastierista Ted Baker e il drummer Jim Beard, che contribuiscono al lavoro dando un'impronta meno complessa e più intima al sound, allontanadolo così in modo netto, dalle armonie jezzate tipiche degli Steely Dan. L'unico neo del disco è senza dubbio la voce di Becker, un problema decisamente insormontabile, e cui lui cerca di sopperire focalizzando il tutto sulla musica e sui testi.

Arriving at Steely Dan's routinely cautious rate - it's been 14 years since the co-founder's last solo album - Circus Money comes swathed in reggae rhythms. But you have to wait until the humdrum opener Door Number Two has wandered off before Becker hits his groove. Bob is Not Your Uncle Anymore, the title track, and Somebody's Saturday Night are well up to Dan standard - melodic, funky and as smart as you like. The tune-free God's Eye View and the previously mentioned opener are not, showing up Becker's lacklustre vocals. Within this decent 13-track set lurks a very fine six-track mini-album.
