Rush - Snakes & Arrows Live

Artist: Rush
Title: Snakes & Arrows Live
Genre: Rock
Release Year: 2008
Type: New release
Audio: 2CD

Steve Winwood - Nine Lives

Ben tornato Steve!!

Review
For a guy who’s been making hit records since his teenage years, Steve Winwood has always tended to keep a curiously low profile; even while he was releasing chart-topping records like 1988’s Roll With It – emblazoned with his face and “WINWOOD” on the cover – his hits were associated more with, say, Michelob than anything to do with the man making the music. He’s always been more of a musician than a rock star, which has probably helped steer him away from the spectacular highs and lows of his peers – a person could build a strong argument for Winwood’s output, solo and otherwise, as the most consistent body of work assembled by any of the rock gods who came out of the ‘60s.

Still, he hasn’t been immune to trends – especially during the ‘80s. The swan song of corporate rock seduced even the most strong-willed of rock’s founding fathers, luring them out to sea with promises of continued relevancy and riches, only to leave them gasping for breath in the cutout bins, their names attached to horrible dreck like Bob Dylan’s Down in the Groove or Clapton’s Behind the Sun. Winwood suffered the misfortune of assembling a beautiful mid-‘80s solo record (1986’s Back in the High Life) with serious yuppie appeal; the resultant sales explosion sent him wandering off in search of more and bigger hits for over a decade, via increasingly dull solo albums such as 1990’s Refugees of the Heart and 1997’s dreadful, Narada Michael Walden-produced Junction Seven. By the turn of the century, a new Winwood record was the furthest thing from most people’s minds – which is probably just the way he likes it.

Solid as most of Winwood’s solo output has been, many longtime fans never stopped hoping for a return to the organ-heavy, jam-friendly sounds of his early sides with the Spencer Davis Group and Traffic, and those hopes finally paid off with 2003’s About Time, which found Winwood making a 180-degree turn away from the well-groomed balladry of his most recent releases and toward longer, looser, and more complex rock & roll. The move paid off – although About Time was independently released on Winwood’s own Wincraft label, the album enjoyed a higher profile than anything he’d released in years, and earned him some of the most positive reviews of his solo career – as well as expanding (and reducing the average age of) his audience.

Up-and-comers The Cab may have gotten signed to Decaydence/Fueled By Ramen on the recommendation of fellow Las Vegas band Panic! At The Disco, but their sound - a soulful melange of punk, pop, and rock - is all their own. In October of 2007, they put together their eagerly awaited debut album, Whipser War. With influences ranging from Justin Timberlake and Maroon 5 to Blink-182, and additional producing by Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump, Whisper War is sure to have something for every listener.

Def Leppard - Songs From The Sparkle Lounge

Artist: Def Leppard
Title: Songs From The Sparkle Lounge
Genre: Rock
Release Year: 2008
Type: New release
Audio: CD

Review
Def Leppard is one of the few ‘80s metal bands with a reputation that far transcends their genre, having wisely sidestepped the stigma of big hair and focused instead on big production, big riffs, and big hooks. Though their sales in the 21st century haven’t come anywhere close to approaching the ridiculous number of units they shifted in the late ‘80s, when they released Hysteria – believe it or not, that record has now officially passed the 20 million mark in sales – the group has settled into a comfortable groove where they release a new album every two or three years and tour the world in support of it…and if summer rolls around and they don’t have a new album, well, by God, they still go on tour!

Though the band’s last collection of originals, 2002’s X, was less than exhilarating, their 2006 covers album Yeah! found DefLep sounding thoroughly reinvigorated as they roared through their versions of the songs that made them want to be rock stars in the first place. As such, excitement was running rather high that their next album would be among the strongest of their career, and when the Sgt. Pepper-inspired cover art was released, it only served to heighten the anticipation. But, then, the word leaked out that the album would feature a collaboration with Tim McGraw…and, suddenly, Songs from the Sparkle Lounge began to sound a whole lot less interesting.

Def Leppard are in a very unique position in the music industry, having managed to maintain enough sales momentum over the decades to keep their major-label deal with Mercury while their peers do stints in lesser locations like CMC International, SPV, and Frontiers Records. The band’s decision to work the Wal-Marts and make the state fair rounds was an undeniably savvy marketing move, playing to the locations where they could arguably find the most fans; unfortunately, when Yeah! was released, Mercury stuck it to those same fans by offering different bonus tracks to different retailers…and, worse, Def Leppard went along with it. Target, Best Buy, WalMart, and iTunes each tacked unique inclusions onto their copies of the album, and the band held a prize giveaway on their website that could only be entered by the fans that were willing buy a copy of Yeah! from each location. The result: Def Leppard’s 10th consecutive Top 20 album.

This leads us to pose a very disconcerting question: how much of this album’s sound was decided by Def Leppard, and how much was decided by a marketing committee at Mercury Records?

Maybe that’s too cynical, but at the very least, it’s clear that the track listing has been structured in an attempt to win new fans rather than please those who’ve stuck by the band. Songs from the Sparkle Lounge kicks off with “Go,” one of the least successful album openers in the band’s career; despite its grinding guitars and pounding drum beat, the song offers precious little in the way of a hook, instead only seeming to shout, “Listen to us as we hold our own with today’s hard-rock artists!” Next up is “Nine Lives,” the aforementioned Tim McGraw collaboration, which starts with the requisite twang that’s inevitable with such a pairing, but after a great pre-chorus, the song’s actual chorus is a complete bore; it’s therefore nothing more than a testament to the power of name recognition in marketing that the track was selected to be used as the opening for ABC’s NBA broadcasts this season. Left languishing in the #3 slot is “C’mon, C’mon,” a glam-rock stomper equipped with lyrics that would’ve made so much better a starting point for the record (“Baby, baby, won’t you give me a good time? / Squeeze me, please me, make it feel like the last time”) that one can’t imagine it wasn’t originally intended as such by the band.

From there, things settle into a familiar Def Leppard groove that the faithful will no doubt appreciate. “Tomorrow” and “Hallucinate” are classic melodic rockers, “Love” is a Queen-inspired ballad which explodes into a symphony of riffs and harmonies just after the three-minute mark, and “Only the Good Die Young” (not the Billy Joel song) is one of the catchiest pop-rock songs that the band has delivered in years. “Bad Actress,” meanwhile, succeeds everywhere that “Go” fails, with the group completely kicking out the jams and sounding more energized than they have in years. Despite these victories, however, Songs from the Sparkle Lounge still occasionally suffers from many of the same problems that plagued X, feeling like Def Leppard by the numbers more often than it should…but does the fault lie with the band, feeling like they need to stick perilously close to their established sound to keep their fans happy, or is Mercury to blame because the familiar is easier for them to market? (The probable answer: a little from Column A, a little from Column B.)

It’s a fair bet that the commercial success of “Nine Lives” will earn the band at least one more album for Mercury; one only hopes it will end up sounding more like a Def Leppard album and less like a Def Leppard product.

Alannah Myles - Black Velvet

Artist: Alannah Myles
Title: Black Velvet
Genre: Pop Rock
Release Year: 2008
Type: New release
Audio: CD

Il disco a questo punto, suona ovviamente pop, senza però perdere in forza o incisività, e canzoni come "Prime Of My Life", "Give Me Love" o "Leave It Alone", dai ritmi cadenzati e ipnotici, ne escono con notevole dignità.

Type: New release

Review
ABC, one of the most original and enduring bands of the last three decades, are back with a brand new album. Following the re-release of a Special Edition of the iconic album `Lexicon of Love' in 2004, lead singer Martin Fry is delighted with the new material. "TRAFFIC is 12 brand new songs, and in 2008 it's a real privilege to be able to compete after 25 years of making music," he says. "These days there has to be a good reason to release an ABC record. It's a real labour of love. There's no point in writing a song unless you are inspired."

`The Very First Time' is one of a number of tracks written whilst touring America last year, while `16 Seconds' was written on a tour bus in Europe and reflects on how fast life is in the 21st century. Fry says of the new album "It's a cosmopolitan record and it's about today - about the journeys people are making today, country to country, internet traffic, human traffic, moving from the past to the present to the future."

Phantom Planet - Raise the Dead

Artist: Phantom Planet
Title: Raise the Dead
Genre: Rock
Release Year: 2008
Type: New release
Audio: CD

Review
Phantom Planet discovered the joys of rockin' out on their third, self-titled album, which felt designed to move them as far away from the piano-driven pop of The Guest as they could get. Four years later, they keep the volume turned up on Raise the Dead, also their first album for Fueled by Ramen. Their anthemic, rowdy sound makes a lot more sense on this label than it did on their previous imprints, and Phantom Planet just seem more comfortable all around on Raise the Dead. Their outbursts are more natural here than they were on Phantom Planet, especially on "Raise the Dead," where they feel completely in control of how the song moves from brisk acoustic guitars to a huge swell of strings and guitars. And even if they still don't go near The Guest's wistful ballad territory — "Quarantine" bares its broken heart with an edge, and "I Don't Mind" is more bouncy than brooding — Phantom Planet balance their brash side with their pop roots with a lot more flair. "Do the Panic"'s rough-and-tumble keyboards and guitars end up falling into place perfectly, "Ship Lost at Sea"'s piston-like drums are pushy and cute at the same time, and "Dropped" feels like a more polished sequel to Phantom Planet's "Bad Business." "Leave Yourself for Somebody Else" is Raise the Dead's purest pop moment, a bracing three minutes' worth of hooks, harmonies, and impatient rhythms. As comfortable as the band sounds on Raise the Dead, it isn't perfect: the chorus of children on "Leader" teeters between charming and cloying, and a few of the later songs, including "Demon Daughters" and "Geronimo," cross the line from loud and rambunctious to just plain screechy. Even with a few stumbles, Raise the Dead is among Phantom Planet's most enjoyable albums. by Heather Phares

Il singolo Get Over It (in advance all'album) ne è un valido esempio.

Review
It can be difficult to know how to condition yourself as a Guillemots fan. First there was Through the Windowpane, a great English pop record full of classy melodrama and widescreen elation, then there were the wilfully eccentric live shows, known to descend into mind-boggling bouts of freeform jazz bombast. And now there is Red, yet another altogether different dragon. You can talk about forcing a square where a circle should be, but this is more like teasing a dodecahedron through a drinking straw. And yet with slick feline agility they somehow wriggle through with little resistance. To get a measure of the differences, penultimate track "Don't Look Down" is one of a few that holds a torch for the first record, leading in with the keyboard twinkles and filmic slow pace, but implodes midway like a fully-laden milk float combusting, and comes out the other side like the Annie cast on helium set to a drum 'n' bass beat. Amazingly, it's as palatable as ever. But that's just for starters. "Kriss Kross" is the hitherto undiscovered melding point between 2Unlimited (of brief 90s techno infamy) and The New Radicals' chiming pop, "Big Dog" is bright lights arena R&B, robotic seduction with a Jacko scream at its heart, "Get over It" is glittery, steroid pumped modern glam and "Last Kiss" is Tubular Bells with distorted bass funnelled into a rave anthem. The whole album's a curveball, but the quality of the songs is undimming and maybe we just got a little closer to discovering what Guillemots quintessentially are. Or maybe not.

Led by songwriter Fyfe Dangerfield, the melodic indie misfits Guillemots second LP 'Red' retains their buoyant optimismand instrumental prowess, but introduces a new-found confidence. Lead single 'Get Over It' is a prime example of this, as are several other more exuberant tracks on this release. Recorded mostly in an East London synagogue and co-produced (alongside the band) by U2 collaborator Adam Noble, 'Red' isan album of pure, attention-grabbing pop songs that marks adirectional departure for its authors.

It is a very good album, with no fillers. Ive heard too many average electronic albums lately. This album got me buzzing again, wicked synths, great melodies, feel good chorus's.

E in chiusura l'hits Im Every Woman.

REM - Around The Sun

Testi di REM

Rieccoli.

REM - Up

Artist: REM
Title: Up
Genre: Rock
Release Year: 2005
Type: New release

Motorpsycho - Little Lucid Moments

Artist: Motorpsycho
Title: Little Lucid Moments
Genre: Psycho Rock
Release Year: 2008
Type: New release
Audio: CD

Ascanio Celestini - Parole Sante

Title: Parole Sante
Genre: Cantautore
Release Year: 2008

Nel 2005 arrivò il secondo disco One Way Ticket to Hell And Back, risultato decisamente sotto tono.

Title: The Newz
Genre: Rock
Release Year: 2008
Type: New release
Audio: CD

Moby - Last Night

Artist: Moby
Title: Last Night
Genre: Elettronica
Release Year: 2008
Type: New release
Audio: CD

Testi di Moby

Last Night, lultima prova dell'eclettico artista newyorchese Moby, non risulta all’altezza dei lavori precedenti.

Ben tornata Mariah!!! Nothing to say!!!
Guest del disco: Damian Marley e l'omnipresente T-Pain.

Review
Years of silly non-musical antics (and non-musical music) have dulled the memory for most of us, but there was a time – the summer and fall of 1990, to be precise – when Mariah Carey seemed like she was destined for capital-g Greatness. Her debut single, “Vision of Love,” was arguably one of the last truly cross-genre smashes in modern pop; whether you were into metal, rap, or rock & roll, you had to sit up and pay attention to the towering voice spilling out of that young girl in the black bodysuit. If you’re going to make your public debut with a song that sounds for all the world like a second cousin to “At Last,” you’d better have balls or pipes. Carey proved right out of the gate that she had both in spades; as it turned out, it would be a lack of common sense that would chip away at all that early promise.

She’s never really stopped selling records, of course, but Carey’s career has been a long study in trading breadth of appeal for continued relevancy with the same demographic she targeted almost 20 years ago – namely, heartsick teenagers. Like Janet Jackson and Madonna, Carey gives the impression of someone obsessed with sounding current; her days of trendsetting are behind her, so each new album is stacked with tracks from whichever producers have notched the most hits for younger, hipper R&B artists in the months since her last release. It’s a cynical way of making records, but if you’ve got the right material, it’s still an effective one – witness “Touch My Body,” this album’s leadoff single, which shot to Number One just before E=MC2’s release, giving Carey a record-setting 18 chart-toppers.

That kind of commercial success is awfully hard to argue with, but critics have been doing it essentially non-stop since Carey released her second album. There are plenty of reasons for this, but the most important one is probably this: Unlike Janet and Madonna, Mariah Carey can actually flat-out sing, so her constant trendjacking comes across as unusually craven and lazy.

And then there’s the matter of her, for lack of a better term, lyrical focus. For a woman who’s nearing 40, Carey seems unusually susceptible to the kind of all-consuming, hearts-in-the-margins, us-against-the-world love (or is that luv?) affairs that most of us remember from our teenage years. Just as her albums’ production has struggled breathlessly to keep up with whatever the kids are listening to, so have her lyrics remained stubbornly focused on the feelings of not-too-bright college sophomores everywhere. In the context of her other records, E=MC2 is no more or less guilty of this – but still, listening to Carey flutter around “the club,” or whimper to her boyfriend about how the world just doesn’t understand their love, is often unintentionally funny. Odds are, you have an embarrassing aunt (or, God forbid, mother) who talks like this – which raises the uncomfortable question of whether, if Carey wasn’t one of the most successful recording artists in history, she’d be wolfing Cheetos and crying through the latest episode of “Dr. Phil.”

Okay, so given all that, why the three and a half stars?

It comes down to this: Regardless of whether or not Carey’s albums have taken advantage of her natural ability – and they haven’t – it doesn’t matter, because the path she’s chosen is one of craft over passion, and E=MC2 is one solidly crafted album. Sure, it’s got its flaws – it surely didn’t need to be 14 songs long, for one thing; for another, it’s getting a little creepy listening to Carey sing kiss-off songs to Tommy Mottola over a decade after their divorce, and also, hearing her slip into Jamaican patois during “Cruise Control” is a classic bit of hilarious foolishness – but there are a lot of bulletproof pop songs in here. “I Stay in Love” (as in, “I stay in love witchoo”) is just waiting to soundtrack a thousand tearstained YouTube confessionals; “Love Story” is an irresistible midtempo ballad; and “I’ll Be Lovin’ U Long Time” will be a hit (it’ll also, God willing, inspire an Eric Cartman remix, but that’s another story).

As she’s proven repeatedly, Carey’s audience doesn’t care whether she’s glomming onto trends, or whether she’s guilty of talent-squandering on par with Michelangelo giving up painting to draw Garfield cartoons; they only care whether she hits that soft sweet spot between pop and R&B – and with E=MC2, she’s done it again. If you’ve been counting the days until Carey is forced to simply strap on an evening gown and let her voice do the work for her, get ready to keep on counting.

Tricarico - Giglio

Type: New release
